X-Men: Days Of Future Past Still Has Storm And Nightcrawler Listed As Maybes

Director Bryan Singer has been very vocal about the actors he will be reuniting with on the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past. Thanks to the film's time travel plotline, having part of the story set in the distant future and others set in the 1970s with the First Class crew, the project has allowed Singer to bring back actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin and Sean Ashmore from the original X-Men trilogy to reprise their roles as Professor X, Magneto, Wolverine, Kitty Pryde, Rogue and Iceman, respectively.

Exciting as all of those announcements have been, however, the nagging question that always comes back is, "Who else?" Nobody stays dead in the world of comics, so could James Marsden and Famke Janssen potentially come back as Cyclops and Jean Grey? What about Aaron Stanford as Pyro or Daniel Cudmore as Colossus? Singer is undoubtedly fielding those questions regularly as he powers through pre-production on the movie, but for today he's responded to questions about two specific characters: Nightcrawler and Storm.

Let's start with the blue teleporter, shall we? A couple months back Alan Cumming, who played the role to acclaim in 2003's X2, went on the record saying that he would be interested in reprising the role should there be a spot for him in the cast. In response to those quotes, The Huffington Posttook the opportunity recently to ask Singer about the possibility of Nightcrawler being in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but sadly his response was rather non-committal. "I don't know. We'll see. You know ... we'll see," he started to say before being prodded for more. "Yeah, I know. I don't want to ... sometimes you don't want to say 'yes' or 'no' to something that may not be a 'yes' or a 'no,' or anything. I haven't decided yet, a few things. I'm still, you know -- there are certain aspects of the script that I'm still toying with."

Similarly, Singer's quotes to MTV are keeping question marks around Halle Berry's potential involvement as well. In December it was rumored that the production was approaching the actress about coming back as the weather-powered mutant Storm, but nothing has ever been confirmed. When asked for a status update, Singer told the network, ""I can’t say. I don’t know yet. And it’s not necessarily a deal making aspect at all. I want to make sure it’ll make sense. But I love working with her."

As exciting as it would be to see a lot of the old mutants from the original trilogy in X-Men: Days of Future Past, I appreciate that Singer doesn't want to go the X-Men: The Last Stand route and over-fill the screen with characters. Production is scheduled to start in the next couple months, so perhaps we'll have a final headcount by then.
